Original Song Lyrics from "Substance and Essence" and "Love's Ripening"
-THE BARN OWL
Laurie Miller © 1995, Making Hay Music
Last August 10th when skies were yellow
wind was on the rise
A tornado swept across her land
took years before her eyes
Her father's father's barn was struck,
memories crushed beneath the boughs
She stood alone and asked the question,
"Where will the barn owl live now?
Where will the barn owl live now?"
The barn had not been used in years,
since the crops began to wane.
The owl had made the barn her home
a shelter from the rain.
Jean's family had watched the owls
protect their nest and young.
The barn was in a pile of rubble:
Where will the barn owl live now?
Where will the barn owl live now?
Through the years Jean worked the land
and kept the house, created home;
Raised a daughter and sons to be proud of
with children of their own.
Jean still works magic with her hands
creating quilts and dolls;
Her husband died a few years back, she wonders
"Where will he be now?
Where will he be now?"
The photographs remind her of the storm in ‘41
The Big Tornado ripped through town,
erasing all they had begun.
Her daughter's infant life was spared,
But others dear had died:
She dreams of them so tenderly, thinking,
"Where would they be now?
Where would they be now?"
Her creations bring her comfort, joy
like babies new and small.
But she feels a wistful longing when the
evening shadows fall.
She's like the morning Texas prairie: beautiful and strong.
But the storm and changes pose the question:
"Where will the barn owl live now?
Hmmmm?"
-MY HOME IS WITH YOU
Laurie Miller ©1995 Making Hay Music
So many times I've looked back
Missing Tennessee hills so blue
But the day I met you my heart found her home:
My home is with you.
CHORUS:
(Darlin') home is wherever you are, my love.
My home is with you.
Wherever we wander, whatever we do:
My home is with you.
We left San Francisco behind
Said "goodbye" to our friends and the Bay
We moved up to Portland with our boxes and dreams
Growing in love each day.
I know our future's untold
Like blossoms that scatter and fall
But as long as I have you, dear, to hold
Home is within us and all.

-LONELY WITH YOU Nadine Sanders ©1995 Making Hay Music
The moon is full the sky is bright
The snow is glistening in its light
Why am I lonely tonight?
I'm driving down this winding backroad
Heading for our home
It's been a long day teaching
The music of my soul
I want to open up the door
Have you welcome me inside
Take me in your loving arms
Where no dreams should be denied.
The moon is full the sky is bright
The stars are dancing in the light
So why am I lonely tonight?
Through the years of loving you I've had many dreams At first they were romantic Escapades and schemes But then when we were married They changed to different things A peaceful home, a safety haven A place to root my wings. |
(Voice 2) (through the years) (I've loved you so) (thought our love) (would surely grow) (when we married on that) (sweet September day) (I never thought that I would) (ever go away.) |
-TOGETHER WE FLY
Laurie Miller © 1996 Making Hay Music
Chorus:
Together we're stronger,
Together we fly.
The future is brighter,
Our worries roll by
Like eagles that soar in the wide summer sky,
Together we fly to new heights.
Your smile sends my spirits winging.
Your touch sets my troubles to flight.
I feel freedom inside from love you provide.
My heart sings with delight.
My heart sings with delight.
Our laughter spreads gladness and sun
Our care gives shape to each day.
We're making a home of commitment and hope.
Together our dreams find a way.
Together our dreams find a way.
-TWILIGHT'S EASE
Laurie Miller © 1996 Making Hay Music
Trees, like black lace,
across the Western sky,
A quiet star glimmers up above.
As the day comes to an end,
It's time to settle down
and remember the people that we love.
Chorus:
Let go of work and worry.
Let go of what you want.
Let go of disappointments,
of memories that haunt.
Let troubles fade, just like the sun.
Embrace the twilight's ease.
And dream tomorrow's promise
of beauty, hope and peace.
Sometimes, when darkness falls,
we're lonely and afraid.
We weep for the suffering, lost and poor.
When you put your hand in mine,
a hope stirs deep within.
And we share the light that is our core.
In silence there's an answer;
in quiet there's a rest.
In the dark of letting go, we face the test.
There's peace within the space
we make to know our part.
There's a joy that rises in our hearts.
