Joyce Harter

When weaving work for the book, Joyce became very excited about the weaving of the pillows with multi-inlay. She sees the potential market for these handwoven gems. The pillows are featured in an article Joyce wrote for Handwoven, Sept/Oct 2002—"Painting with fabrics in Theo Moorman technique."

Joyce in Ecuadorian Jazz Dress

This began with an interesting remnant of skirt material. The designs for the shoulder area of the handwoven fabric are suggested by the design element in the cloth of the skirt. Cotton, rayon and silk yarns form the warp and weft with cotton embroidery floss woven into the designs.

Joyce calls these "paintings in yarn by two grandmas who share the same grandchildren." These are a handwoven interpretation of paintings by Jean Lobe, who granted Joyce permission to render her paintings in weavings.
"Using the Theo Moorman technique allows for the total saturation of a mix of yarns to nearly duplicate the vivid color tones and interpretation of the form that Jean uses in her paintings." -- JH

Purple Waulking Jacket
by Nadine Sanders

I love teaching at the John C. Campbell Folkschool in Brasstown, NC. When I was there in October 2001, I warped a community loom in the weaving studio. I invited students from all the different studios to come weave on it during the week. At the end of the week, I gave my program, "Beyond Plaid: Fiber Art and Music of Scotland." Included in the program was a waulking of the cloth by students at the school. It was Elderhostel week and I have never had such energetic and enthusiastic waulkers and singers thump and rub cloth as this bunch! I sewed the fabric into this garment made for the school's annual August auction.
